An article on a remarkable hero that broke into Auschwitz - and lived. Denis Avey broke into Auschwitz to bear witness to the horrors dealt out by Nazi hands. I am fiercely glad that he came forward and  spoke out about the hell he has witnessed, despite people refusing to believe him for so long. I don't understand how some people can have the nerve to deny that the Holocaust ever happened. I hope that more eye witnesses like him will continue to come forward and tell their story. The Holocaust is a horrifying and unspeakable genocide. Memories of the Holocaust continues to haunt generations now, and will continue to do so in the future. We need to remember what happened, so that it never happens again.

Sir Martin Gilbert says: “By 1947, the trials of Nazi war criminals had been and gone. The war was over and people just wanted to get on with their lives. There was a whole mind-set of not really wanting to know what had happened any more. Many people had stories that nobody was interested in. It must have been very painful.”

Sixty-five years after the liberation of Auschwitz, when eyewitnesses are dying out and Holocaust denial is burgeoning, Denis Avey’s extraordinary tale has finally found its moment. “I’m talking to you so it will do some good,” he says fiercely, pounding his fingers on the table for emphasis. “That’s all I’ve ever wanted.”

From ANC website: The Genocide of the Armenians by the Turkish government during World War I represents a major tragedy of the modern age. In this - the first Genocide of the 20th century - almost an entire nation was destroyed. The Armenian people were effectively eliminated from the homeland they had occupied for nearly three thousand years. This annihilation was premeditated and planned to be carried out under the cover of war.

During the Genocide, countless Armenians were sent to concentration camps. Many were driven out from their homes. They were sent on forced marches. Many were rounded up and burnt. The Turkish government ordered the deportation of the Armenian people to "relocation centers" . Many Armenians suffered torture, dehumanisation, rape and pillage during this horrifying ordeal.
The most horrifying thing? The Turkish government is still in denial that the Armenian Genocide ever happened. This is unspeakable. It's plain disgusting, and shameful.

From ANC news:
In the lead-up to the 2007 Federal Election, now-Member for Bennelong, the Hon. Maxine McKew pledged to "unequivocally and publically" advocate for Armenian Genocide recognition by the Federal Government of Australia.

Two years since her election, Ms McKew has failed to honour that pledge.

She also welcomed the 'historical commission' proposed in the one-sided Turkey-Armenia Protocols, something which has been protested by Armenians worldwide, as well as in her electorate of Bennelong.

Call on her to honour her pledge. Tell her to urge other MPs to recognise the Armenian Genocide here:

The Burmese military regime's economic mismanagement, poor governance and oppression of the people, poverty and disease has greatly increased. This September, The Burmese Monks' peaceful protest was violently repressed by the Burmese government. Moreover, the Burmese dictatorship continues its brutal treatment against ethnic minorities, destroying over 3,000 villages, forcing millions from their homes, and conscripting more child soldiers than any country in the world.

From the "Don't Forget Burma" website (http://www.dontforgetburma.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=15&Itemid=41):
Burma, a country of around 50 million people is ruled by fear. A military machine of 500,000 soldiers denies a whole nation its most basic rights. Aung San Suu Kyi, pro-democracy leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner, symbolises the struggle of Burma's people to be free.

Aung San Suu Kyi's Party, the National League for Democracy (NLD) won 82% of the seats in elections held in 1990. The people of Burma overwhelmingly rejected military rule yet the military continues to refuse to transfer power to Burma's democratically elected leaders.
