Queen of the Iron Sands, by Scott Lynch
Nov. 1st, 2012 10:33 pmhttp://www.scottlynch.us/ironsands.html Gogogogo! Read this, it is simply wonderful! :D Science fiction as it should be. I am no expert on science fiction (although I do enjoy reading Vonnegut and H G Wells). But I read it and loved it. This is science fiction with adventure, passion and wonder. Unlike old science fiction tales / planetary romances that excuse or minimise racism, slavery and imperialism (I am *looking* at you, Mr Edgar Rice Burroughs), Lynch examines how brutal and horrifying those practices are.
I am making this sound way too heavy too read. It isn't. It is really accessible. I took a chance on this, and I loved it. Violet is a tough, funny and generous lady. I fell in love with Lynch's portrayal of Texas, and Violet's family life. The scenes on World War Two are well researched and so poignant too. The action heats up when Violet reaches Mars. I won't spoil the rest.
If you do choose to donate, the money helps Scott Lynch maintain his page. The more you donate, the more chapters he will upload. The money also goes towards supporting Jay Lake, a patient who requires cash for cancer treatments. Every bit helps a lot, more than you could imagine. Even if you can't donate, you can always boost the signal and post about this. Thank you so much!
