I know the Christmas holidays are over already. But be sure to watch Psychetruth's youtube on holiday fire safety tips (even if you don't celebrate Christmas, as some of these tips apply to everyone):

Tips from Texas firefighter Ms Mckenzie include:
-Keep a smoke detector in every level of your home (and every room if possible)
-Check that there are no chinks in the holiday lights
-check that there are no scratches, gaps, holes in cords
-don't overload power sockets with too may plugs in sockets, or too many extension cords
-get a Christmas tree that is artificial (to reduce fire risk)
-If you buy a real Christmas tree, make sure keep your tree moist to reduce fire risk
-Keep pine needles away from children
-vacuum and maintain tree
-don't throw wrapping paper into the fireplace (doing this could shoot embers everywhere or start a fire)
-ensure you have candles on an open area and a flat surface where they won't be knocked over
-make sure your artificial Christmas tree is flame retardant
-Don't put lit candles on a Christmas tree. Don't keep Christmas tree near heat sources (like space heaters, an heater or fireplace)
