Hi everyone,

Please sign  the petition to repeal the Don't Ask Don't Tell law! Sign here: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/385/186/095

Thanks so much for signing or spreading the word!

Read below for more info: (text in italics is from The Petition Site):

The U.S. has never had this much momentum to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" -- the discriminatory law that forces gays and lesbians to live a lie if they want to serve their country.

McCain's anti-gay vendetta is so desperate that he's announced he will help block the Senate from repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," and the right-wing Family Research Council is making outlandish and bogus claims that repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" will increase sexual assault in the military and "undermine the religious liberties" of military chaplains.

[livejournal.com profile] www/@booksandcorsets lost everything in a fire. Her roommate probably lost everything too. Nobody was injured or hurt, but people need help to get back on their feet. She'll only have a place to stay for a week. After that, she's on her own. Please repost this or send some dollars her way, so she won't be left out on the streets. Thank you.

Read more here - the text in italics below is from rosefox's dreamwidth journal: http://rosefox.dreamwidth.org/1597560.html

Today while she was at work, she got a call from her landlord saying that her house was on fire. By the time she got home, there was nothing left. Literally, nothing. Her beloved pet birds, her family heirlooms, her books and clothes and furniture and brand new iPad, all gone. Read more... )She had tried to get renter's insurance and got stuck in the labyrinthine bureaucratic process, so she has pretty much no recourse except for those of us who care about her.

If you can send a few bucks her way, please do, and spread the word...My heartfelt thanks for anything you can give.

Save GLBT activist from execution

Kiana Firouz is courageous Iranian LGBT activist, film maker and actress. She has spoken out about GLBT rights in Iran, risking her safety and life in doing so. Recently, Kiana has starred in a documentary about lesbians in Iran. She is now at risk of being deported from the UK to Iran to "answer for it". The punishment for homosexuality there is 100 lashes for the first three times. If someone ‘commits homosexual acts’ the 4th time, they are executed by the state.  Sign here to back Kiana and save her life:

Fight for African Americans' rights: say No to Lincoln

Senator Blanche Lincoln played a major role in erasing the public option from the health care bill.2  She also opposed President Obama's plans to help struggling homeowners avoid foreclosure3 and to increase funding for college scholarships.4

The election is likely to be very close. Lincoln's opponent in the primary, Lieutenant Governor Bill Halter, is facing millions of dollars in racially charged attack ads from big business groups that want Lincoln staying in office. We're trying to help Halter fight those ads with small donations from our members.

Can you give $5 or more today to help?

Petition: Save an innocent man from execution

The following text in italics is from emails by Amnesty and Get Up! organisation:

In April 1991 in St. Louis, Missouri, two young white women plunged from a bridge into the Mississippi River. Three African American youths, who may well be innocent, are paying for the crime - all sentenced to death. One man has been executed, one had his sentence reduced to life imprisonment and the third, Reggie Clemons, sits on death row right now, at risk of execution.

The case against Reggie is one with no physical evidence, two highly questionable witnesses - both of whom were initially charged with the crime - and a trail of alleged police coercion, misconduct from lawyers on both sides of the case, and racial inequities so sharp that a growing number of human and civil rights supporters, including actor, Danny Glover2, are taking notice and calling for immediate justice.

Hello there everyone,

For more information, please read below and see yeonah's full post here: http://community.livejournal.com/good_ideas/61526.html?view=50262#t50262 Here is an excerpt from yeonah's post:

Maëlle is yeonah's French teacher's 7 year old daughter. She has been diagnosed with autism and a neuro-muscular disorder, and during this school semester alone has been on the edge of death too many times to count.  If my french teacher cancels a class, as her students we are NOT happy for the break...we are worried about what has happened to Maëlle.

The idea of sending her pictures and notes was thought up by [info]mi_iseul , and we're expanding it to everyone.  And I mean everyone.  This is going to be a scrapbook for her, with pictures, drawings, stories and little notes from all around the world.  Canada, USA, Singapore, Japan, Australia, England, Ireland, France.  We want to draw in as many participants as we can, to help this little girl smile.

So what are we asking of you?  Anything.  Anything you want to send to her.  The first deadline will be in a week (Monday, May 17th) which doesn't allow for much, but this will be an ongoing project so perhaps in the future we can organize small gifts to be sent, material things that she can hold in her hands.  For now though, we ask for everything to be submitted electronically via the internet.  Pictures and drawings will be printed out on good paper, notes printed in script, stories on lined paper, and everything will be scrapbooked.
(Don't worry about notes in English.  Tsuki, myself and my friends here will translate them all for you if you can't write in French)

Please send all contributions to maelles.scrapbook@gmail.com, we will be collecting everything through that address <3

Thank you so much, everyone!!! This will help Maelle smile. I think it is a beautiful idea.

Hello everyone,

The text in italics is from the websites below. Please read ahead, and tell everyone you know! Both are urgent issues.

Urge US to prevent maternal deaths:

Linda Coale, a healthy 35-year-old woman who died just days after giving birth to her son, Benjamin. Her age and delivery via c-section made her a high-risk case, yet no one – nurse, doctor, hospital welcome packet – told her to watch for signs of a blood clot.

She slipped through the cracks and died.

Benjamin, now 2, can’t celebrate Mother’s Day with his mom. But you can help save another son or daughter the heartbreak of growing up without a mother. I
n 40 countries women have a lower risk of maternal death than in the United States, and all of those countries spend less on health care.

Amnesty’s work on maternal health tackles the root causes of preventable maternal death such as discrimination, inadequate care and lack of secure access to care. Our goal is to make safe birth a top priority in the U.S. health system.

Our strategy has worked to make substantive changes and save women’s lives in Sierra Leone and Burkina Faso. Now it’s time to rise up for American women and children.

Help families celebrate a thousand more Mother’s Days with a gift to Amnesty International today.

Arizona's new anti-immigration law

Players are demanding the 2011 All-Star Game be moved from Phoenix, AZ unless the new law - which allows police to stop anyone they "reasonably" suspect of being in the country illegally - is repealed.

It's time we get the players' backs. I just signed a petition urging MLB Commissioner Bud Selig to move the game--can you join me at the link below?

Hello there everyone,

Please help out moonstone_fae and her family by donating whatever you can. She and her family lost everything in a  flood - furniture, electrical appliances, various clothes, toiletries, food. It's a bad place to be, but donating money, toiletries, food, furniture will help lift moonstone_fae and her family out of trouble. Sadly, her family can't get government assistance as they're not a military family. So help is desperately needed - and she'll appreciate it so much!

Thank you so much if you do donate or raise awareness!

http://community.livejournal.com/needagooddeed/7031.html

My family lives just north of Memphis, TN in the military town of Millington.  We are not military - I say this because those people are getting government assistance.  Our house was under nearly 5 1/2 feet of water.  We lost it all:  new couch, bedroom suite, TV, computers.  You name it, we lost it.  I've been trying to find the light in the situation.  I'm trying to remember that from bad comes good.

Normally I am a giver.  I've given away over 8,500 items in the past 2 years.  I always adopt a family for christmas & go all out.  I am always giving so I don't know how to accept help.  It's hard to remember that even my gracious thank you is enough for most people.

It was suggested that I post here & share the link.

This is the original post of things we're missing.  However, please note that we lost it all so anything is greatly appreciated.  Things I may not be able to use can be shared with my neighbors or to our local Freecycle site.

Thank you for considering us worthy.  We are humbled beyond belief.

How to find an lj community that focuses on your area of interest/hobby/questions you want to ask:

- Go to  menu called "Profile" at the top of your livejournal page

- Click on the option "Edit profile"

- In the section marked Interests, type in your interest/s. For example, if you're interested in mental health, type in mental health (separate your interests by comma, so that your interest/s will have a hyperlink that will show you livejournal communities and lj users that discuss mental health)

Your edited profile should have a list of your interest/s. Your interests should be in blue font. If they are in blue font/writing, that means they have a hyperlink (this means that clicking on the link will take you to another webpage that shows you which communities and lj users share your interest). If your interest/s are in black font/writing, then there is no hyperlink (which means nothing will happen if you click on the interest).

Click on your interest (eg click on mental health in the Interests section of your profile) .

A list of individual livejournal bloggers and livejournal communities who discuss/speak about your interest will be shown.

Best of luck in finding what you are searching for, everybody! :) I know it can be a real drag trying to find lj communities that discuss your interests...so I thought that posting this would make life a little easier.

Sign petition to support creation of a law in US that will create jobs for vulnerable and disadvantaged people:

Across America, jobs are getting harder and harder to come by, and people are suffering. But now some in Congress are championing a sensible plan to help make things right.

The Local Jobs for America Act (H.R.4812) would create up to 1 million jobs in the country's hardest-hit communities, and every member of Congress should be behind it.

Will you take a moment to ask your representative to co-sponsor and fight for the bill? Sign the petition here:

Hello everyone,

If you live in USA, please sign the petition here to close the Gun Show loophole (Unfortunately, people who live outside the US can't sign the petition.) : http://www.closetheloophole.org/main.cfm

Because of this loophole, criminals are allowed to buy guns without a background check. This has sadly led to many innocent people being brutally murdered every year.

The Gun Show Loophole is a serious gap in our nation’s gun laws, which allows individuals to buy guns without passing a background check. Over the years, this loophole has resulted in countless tragic shootings -- including the one at Columbine High School and the recent shooting of Pentagon police officers.

As concerned citizens, we stand with over 500 mayors from all across America in asking Congress to step up and close the Gun Show Loophole.

It is critical that criminal background checks are conducted on all purchasers at gun shows -- including people who buy from private sellers.

As we commemorate the tragedies at Columbine and Virginia Tech, we are reminded that legislative action is long overdue.

More and more innocent victims of gun violence are hurt or killed every day. It’s time for Congress to take action and close the Gun Show Loophole.

A quake in Tibet has killed thousands of people and destroyed so many homes. People's lives have been uprooted in an instant. Donate here: http://tibetanvillageproject.org/

The Tibetan Village Project is doing marvellous work in rebuilding Tibet. They teach Tibetans how to fish and run their own businesses. TVP also helps Tibetan earthquake survivors stand on theri own feet by teaching them other job skills. Here is information on what they do from the above website:

TVP's rural educational program focuses on Tibetan language preservation and literacy. When you make a donation, it enables us to support about ten schools with 1200 students through stipends, tuition, food, warm blankets and clothing, textbooks, and school supplies. TVP also teaches visitors how to protect and respect Tibet's environment. It also raises awareness of Tibetan culture through photo exhibits, presentations and cultural events. Most rural Tibetans still face enormous challenges in healthcare. Many find it nearly impossible to access healthcare and can't afford to pay for it. TVP provides medical supplies, equipment, stipends, frequent training opportunities for healthcare workers.

There are almost four thousand dead. Even more thousands have been severly injured. Please help assist survivors, no matter where their political loyalties lie.

Please consider donating or reposting. Thank you so much if you do. This is so terrible and heartbreaking.

Hello everyone,

Please read the email below. Shoot a message to Immigration Minister Chris Evans NOW to stop this. Australia has become the first developed country in the world to stop processing asylum-seeker applications from Afghanis & Sri Lankans. These refugees are fleeing persecution in their war-torn countries. This policy is obscene. Seriously? These are people escaping from torture and war. Many have loved ones that are missing or dead. They've been through enough already. Why would anyone in their right minds shut the door on them and refuse help?

The Rudd government should be ashamed of themselves! We should not be turning our backs on people fleeing war. This is not something we should avert our eyes from. I don't want to return to the grim Howard years. Thank you so much if you do spread the message!

On the day of the Government's announcement, a young Sri Lankan teenager gave in to despair and attempted suicide, after languishing in detention for 11 months on Christmas Island. Today there's news of more desperation, with a hunger strike by 50 Sri Lankan and Afghan asylum seekers.

Can you take a stand against this frightening return to the dark days of refugees in custody? Tell Immigration Minister, Chris Evans, that Australians reject a return to this shameful past:

This website busts myths on refugees. Please feel more than free to use this webpage to explain why we should help refugees - and why fears about refugees are mainly false.

Hi everyone,

Please sign the petition below to protect people displaced by Hurricane Katrina. 5 years have passed, and these survivors are left vulnerable to human rights abuses. They're still homeless.

http://takeaction.amnestyusa.org/siteapps/advocacy/ActionItem.aspx?c=jhKPIXPCIoE&b=2590179&aid=14093&ICID=P1003A04&tr=y&auid=6191243

Calling for a reform of the Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Act (a Federal disaster law) will help Hurricane Katrina survivors to return to their homes. Feel free to read the text from the Amnesty website below to learn more.

The poor response to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita demonstrated that America needs to develop a robust, strategic plan for initial disaster response and long term disaster recovery. Almost 5 years later, the U.S. government still fails to adequately protect the rights of internally displaced persons (IDPs).

Senator Mary Landrieu has pledged her commitment to reform federal disaster laws such as the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Act, but has yet to introduce legislation. Reform of the Stafford Act will ensure both that the Gulf Coast is rebuilt and that the human rights of people displaced by future disasters will be protected.

International human rights standards protect victims of disasters like Hurricane Katrina. Amnesty International USA calls upon authorities in the local, state and federal government to uphold the rights of all Katrina evacuees to return to their homes. We urge officials to provide long-term, healthy, and affordable housing so that survivors can exercise their right to return, by introducing legislation to reform the Stafford Act today.

A very helpful email I received from a friend:

For only $5, a pair of chickens can provide a family from a poor community in Burma, Cambodia, India or Uganda with a source of eggs to eat and sell. So, they’ll be healthier and on the way to earning a small income.

When you order, you can choose a traditional printed card or an e-card to give to a friend or relative for Easter – or any occasion. You’ll also receive a tax-deductible receipt.

Why not encourage people in your church or workplace to buy Easter chickens, by downloading a
free promotional poster?

Buy your chickens online, or call (toll free) 1800 244 986.

Thanks for your support.

An earthquake of 8.8 magnitude has destroyed Chile on 27 February 2010. Over 800 people are dead. Many people are also missing. Countless people are also disabled. I can't imagine what it must be like for the people who are still alive. It must be frightening not knowing what's happened to missing loved ones. This is so terrible and heartbreaking.

Help The Project is a fandom auction to benefit The Virginia Avenue Project. (Note: the website is temporarily down; they're working on getting it back up.)

The Virginia Avenue Project mentors Los Angeles children and teenagers, teaching classes in theatre and other arts, tutoring them in academics, and partnering with them to create and perform original plays.

From the Project: "The stats on the auction are outdated - new stats: 100% high school, 95% college and 98% first in the family..."

As grants for arts and education have been cut, we are in danger of losing our centerpiece program, the One-on-Ones, in which short plays are specially written for each kid to act in with a professional actor. We take them to summer camp to rehearse, then return to Los Angeles to put on a show.

This program changes kids’ lives... and it’s not happening this year unless we can raise $15,000 by mid-March.

Bidding opens:
Bidding begins the morning of February 3, 12:01 AM one minute after midnight Pacific Time, 2010
(GMT: 08:01:00 Wednesday February 3, 2010)

Bidding closes: the morning of March 1, 12:01 AM one minute after midnight Pacific Time, 2010
