petitions

A way of raising awareness on how people can tackle poverty, violence, deaths, suffering, injustice. Shouting out about these issues with our voices combined, so that those in charge are more likely to listen to us and change things. It may sound weird, but petitions work. I've received emails from Avaaz, and Amnesty International that say their petitions have helped world leaders change their policies, and help set human rights activists free. They can and do work. Not always, but sometimes they work.

They're more likely to work if people work together in different ways (donations, volunteering to visit countries needing aid, raising awareness of human rights abuses, writing letters to newspapers and world leaders, raising publicity through blogging and speaking to radio show hosts).

Rebecca ;)

Thank you for picking this, quasilover. :) Rebecca is a wonderful book. Rebecca herself is a wonderfully fascinating character. She ends up feeling just as real as the protagonist (and as real life people I've met). This is amazing, considering how the reader never gets to meet her (the characters just talk about her). The parts where Mrs. Danvers misses her and shows jealousy is heartbreaking.

I also loved the contrast between the timid, shy Mrs de Winter and the bold, irresistable and cruel Rebecca. The second half of the book where Mrs de Winter ends up looking les sympathetic and Rebecca starts looking more human? Loved it, and did not see it coming.

The book is chilling, romantic and mysterious. It has a wonderful Gothic feel. Few books with a Gothic atmosphere I've read have characterisation as vivid as Rebecca.

LJ comments

Er. I make lots of them? I should post more often, though. If anyone is waiting for lj comments and I don't reply quickly, it's probably because I'm busy with work. :)

human rights

-the right to life
-freedom from torture (baeraad's definition of torture here http://baeraad.livejournal.com/151948.html#cutid1 is the best one I've ever come across: "if someone finds something so unpleasant that he's willing do anything to make it stop, then I think you're justified in calling it "torture," no matter how different it is from racks and thumbscrews").
-freedom from other cruel and inhuman treatment
-rights to a fair trial
-free speech
-freedom of religion
-freedom from discrimination based on sex, age, racial/cultural background, sexual orientation, marital status, class, disability, appearance, religion, appearance
-rights to health, education and an adequate standard of living.

Human rights exist for everyone. Nobody can take them away.

Human rights are more easily protected in countries that are safe and peaceful - which is why they are most easily violated in wartorn or politically unstable countries, or countries upset by natural disasters.

Sadly, human rights aren't recognised everywhere around the world. And a lot of countries still don't even make Human Rights treaties a part of their laws (including developed countries like Australia). http://www.hreoc.gov.au/education/hr_explained/7_Australia_treaties.html

Quasi

I love Disney!Quasi. He's the eternal underdog. What's not to love? He' s sweet, artistic, shy, and brave. He eventually grows the courage to stand up to Frollo in Disney HoND. I didn't like how Phoebus go Esmeralda istead of Quasi (it seemed to say that ugly guys can't win the girl). I still love Quasi and HoND, though.

Book! Quasi is a tragic figure. Violent, scary, unexpectedly tender and vulnerable. His life seems to be one long series of kicks to the teeth (mind you, it seems that way for most of Victor Hugo's characters). NDdP is so poignant and stays with me long after the pages are closed.

Shout out 'Words!' And I will post 5 words that remind me of you. Post what those words mean to you in your lj.

Simple enough. :)
