The SES advises that you should not drive through flood waters, or allow children to play in or near flood water. If you're worried about friends or family in the cyclone area, ring the National Registration and Inquiry System (NRIS) number, 1300 993 191 rather than contacting local police stations. International enquiries for the NRIS can be made at + 61 7 3055 6220.

Tackling heat waves head on in Australia

“While heat-related illness may affect anyone, certain groups are particularly vulnerable. These include the over 75s, infants and children, people with a chronic medical condition and people who live alone,” Dr Smith said.
“During hot weather, it is very important for people stay in regular contact with their elderly friends, neighbours and relatives, and look out for other vulnerable members of their community,”
Some simple precautions will help people minimise their risk of heat-related illness:
