How to help Cambodians with disabilities
Jan. 2nd, 2011 09:03 pmThis is cross posted from a locked post of mine - so f-list, you've already read this before. :)
Many Cambodians live in poverty, and the tourguide mentioned that one of the best ways to help Cambodians is to donate to charities, rather thank giving out money to beggars (although you can do this too). There are musicians who are survivors of landmines that play for money near some famous landmarks (including Angkor Thom temple and Ba Kheng, which I've visited), and donation boxes near markets and the airport. You can also buy products from vendors with disabilities at many markets and tourist spots, too.
Many people are disabled in Cambodia as a result of landmines. This is extremely sad and common, but there are things that you can do to help. You can learn more about how to help people with disabilities in Cambodia here: http://disabledfeminists.com/2010/02/09/c ambodia-landmines-disability-and-social-s tigma/
You don't necessarily have to donate money, either. You can help a lot, simply by raising awareness of which organisations are assisting Cambodians with disabilities with getting back on their feet.
