Hello everyone,

According to Amnesty International USA, the human rights of immigrants at Port Isabel are being ignored. They have been denied their right to a custody hearing.

Dozens of immigrants have been in the facility for months and years. Many have never been brought before a judge to find if detention is necessary.

One man who had been in the
United States since he was 15 months old explained to Amnesty that Immigration and Customs Enforcement is attempting to deport him to Haiti. They are deporting him even though he has never been to Haiti in his life. He has already been detained for almost 2 years. Outrageously, he has no right to a custody hearing under immigration law.

Amnesty International USA reports that immigrants at Port isabel are imprisoned, and alone. These immigrants receive rare or no communication with family, friends or the outside world.

AI was informed that more than a dozen of them went on hunger strike to protest their long and forced detention. Fortunately, Amnesty International were able to meet with the immigrants and will share their experiences with the US Congress.

Amnesty International's research-driven monitoring has resulted in life-saving outcomes for people seeking asylum.

This work involves unimaginable hours of research, interviews and work with allies to convince the U.S. government that no one should be deprived of their liberty without due process.

All of us need to continue pressuring Congress to change the law. This must be done so that Immigration and Customs Enforcement does not have the authority to arrest, imprison and deport immigrants without caring for their long time residence, family ties, and the consequences of exile (whether it is exile through detention or deportation).

These efforts cost money. Please chip in to cover this cost by joining the Partners of Conscience, Amnesty's monthly giving program. https://takeaction.amnestyusa.org/site/c.jhKPIXPCIoE/b.4026757/k.A143/Monthly_Giving/apps/ka/sd/donor.asp?c=jhKPIXPCIoE&b=4026757&ICID=G0906F01&msource=W0906ID&tr=y&auid=4932706

The Partners of Conscience Program only requires monthly donations of $5. This will allow AI to continue to fight for the rights of immigrants who are unjustly imprisoned.

Even if you can't donate, please pass on the message so that others can. Thank you.
