Hellsing fanfiction, help_haiti

Hello everyone,

Below is a sample of my fanfiction (Hellsing based) which was written as a meme present for Rachel (systemaurora). I'm just starting out as a fanfiction writer. I'm planning to take part in the help_haiti lj community (for the fic exchange). Will definitely keep you updated.

Comfort

Seras shivered, hugging herself.

“All those men, our colleagues...killed. I killed them.” Her voice broke. “I killed them all”.

Walter laid a hand on her arm.

“Seras. Your vampire instincts took over at the scent of blood. You couldn’t have helped it. It wasn’t your fault.”

Seras nodded, trembling.

“How do you feel?” Walter asked, quietly.

“Awful. Angry. Scared.”

Walter wrapped his arms around her. They sat together in silence.

“They...I’ll never forget their faces. All of them...ghouls,” murmured Seras.

“If your vampire instincts hadn’t taken over, we might all have been killed. You did what you had to do. We all owe our lives to you.”

“Yes.”

Seras looked up.

“Walter?”

“Yes?”

“Have you ever seen anything...like this before? Someone you cared about turning into a ghoul?”

“Yes...I have. Sixty years ago. My mother.” Walter lowered his eyes.

“It’s not something I expected to happen. I saw people turning into ghouls millions of times before, and that broke my heart. But this nearly destroyed me.”

“I’m so sorry to hear that. Did you have to destroy her too?”

“Yes. It changed the way I saw people being transformed into ghouls. I was furious when people were turned into ghouls before, of course. But after my mother was turned, I...changed.

It’s hard enough to kill a ghoul, knowing they used to be someone else’s brother, aunt, wife, or child. But it’s almost impossible to go on and destroy them if they’re someone you know. But it’s something we must all confront. And we must go on. Because if we don’t, people die. If they’re lucky. If they’re not...they don’t die human. And they end up robbing others of their humanity.

Fighting ghouls must have been unthinkable for you. Especially when you had to fight your own police colleagues at Cheddar. And especially after yesterday. It’s never easy. But it gets easier, after time. And I know it’s easy to say, but I know that you’ll get through this. I know you will. You’re one of the strongest people I’ve ever met.”

“Thank you,” Seras said quietly.

Forgiveness

“Walter!” Seras called out.

Walter turned, wondering what she could possibly have to say to him after his heel face turn. Alucard and Integra had said enough. More than enough, and he could not blame them.

“I know this may seem strange to say, after everything. But...go in good health...thank you. Thank you for everything!” Seras’ eyes shone with tears.[1]

Walter bowed his head. He closed his eyes.

“You too!” he replied, deeply moved. He did not deserve forgiveness after his betrayal. But Seras had forgiven him, and that was more than enough.

Seras turned, and threw him one last glance before vanishing.

Walter stood staring after her, long after she had disappeared.

Regret

Walter narrowed his eyes. “You and all of your work are nothing but a cheap comedy”.[2]

Doc scowled, eyes burning with fury. His mouth opened in a horrible silent scream. Then his silent scream turned into a real one.

The flames of the burning zeppelin roared, swallowing Mina's corpse. A support beam from the wreckage of the zeppelin plummeted towards Doc. It smashed Doc’s body with a sickening crack. Bullets and screams exploded everywhere. The scent of blood and dust slammed Walter’s nostrils. *

Well, well, thought Walter. How ironic. What a sick joke and monstrosity that pathetic Professor was. Like his ghouls. Like me. And everything else in this laughable hell.

He straightened, and sighed.

Puppets for a mad war. Dancing to the tune of an insane Pied Piper. That’s all we are, he thought wearily.

“It’s all useless,” he whispered. He had sacrificed his humanity for immortality. He had betrayed his master. He would pay the price. And he would not complain about his lot. What had befallen him was all his fault.

He sagged from exhaustion. Around him, guns exploded, bullets screamed, and buildings crumbled. The acid stench of smoke assaulted him. Walter paid no heed.

Blood gushed from his wounds, and his body began to age. First, there was a dull thud of pain. Then an agonizing explosion of pain in his limbs. His body began to crumble to dust.

For the first time in a long time, he felt tired.

Alucard was right, he thought. We are all just puppets in this senseless war. How strange that I wanted to defeat Alucard. It serves no purpose. My life had so much purpose when I was serving Integra. Protecting the rest of Hellsing. And now everything seems so...useless.

He closed his eyes.

“Farewell, Integra[3]. Seras. Alucard,” he murmured.

His last thoughts were of Seras thanking him, despite all he had done. Walter smiled. He kept on smiling, even when the flames of the zeppelin engulfed him.

Go in good health, Seras, he thought. Thank you so much. For everything.

Ageing

“Ah, yes. I remember now. Alucard.” Walter’s eyes lit with recognition[4].

“And that is why ageing is so dreadful.[5]

“But for us John Bulls, ageing is very enjoyable!”[6] said Walter, smiling. Alucard shook his head in admiration.

Alucard knew he was completely different from the butler. Faster, stronger, smarter. Unchanging, and without any weaknesses. He knew he could never be as flawed, limited, as human as Walter. And yet, Walter’s humanity was what made him so beautiful. To accept death without flinching was how someone could rise above being an animal.

“You truly enjoy ageing, Angel of Death?”

“Well, yes. Why not? I am now much wiser, and confident than I have ever been. When you grow old, you learn about what truly matters in life. To let go, and simply live in the moment. Because you don’t know which moment will be your last.”

“Isn’t there anything that you regret about growing old?”

Walter paused to think.

“Well. Most of the people I love are gone. I learn to accept this, of course. It gets easier with time, but that doesn’t mean it’s never hard to deal with having lost someone I loved. I have my good moments when I can face having lost someone who meant the world to me. And I have my worse moments too, when nothing can console me. I suppose that’s how it always is.”

Man and Monster

“Walter, you idiot!” snarled Alucard. He ground his teeth, trembling in anger. “How could you be so stupid.”

He lowered his voice, and smiled mockingly. “What was it you said? If we cannot have our prosperity with pride, then we should reject such prosperity".[7]

Then his voice softened. “Your old, frail body was a million times more beautiful than this... ugly thing.” [8]

Walter shook his head, saddened and disbelieving.

“Fool! Nobody in their right mind would trade being a man for being a monster for all eternity. To face the indignity of death with dignity is what makes someone a true human”.

“You dare to lecture me on being human?” Walter asked, eyes widening. “You couldn’t even face being human! It is why you are what you are now!”

“Better to be a monster than to be a traitor.” Alucard scowled.

Walter lifted his chin, and shrugged. “I know better than you. I know that I made the right choice.”

“You once knew what made it worth it to be human. What happened to that man I knew? You’re not a man anymore. You’re not even a dog.”

Walter clenched his fists.

“I am much, much more than a man”.

Alucard searched for a trace of the man he once knew. The one who had faced death and ageing with equal dignity and courage. But deep inside, he knew it was hopeless. That man (if he had ever existed) was long gone.
