I haven't seen any of the recent adaptations myself. (Unless you count Elementary but unfortunately I got behind on watching that and don't know what if anything they did with Irene.)

But anyway, yes, I totally agree with what you're saying about her -- she's not a villain. And she absolutely did impress Holmes and that's a central point in the original story.
