Hi there,

This is for any Americans out there, as the website doesn't allow non Americans to write to the American Senate or their president. :) If you are a non American, you can still email the US's White House here http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/submit-questions-and-comments

From the Roots Action website:

"The U.S. Senate has 100 senators, but 41 make almost every decision.
The filibuster, now employed routinely, allows this minority-rule. Any step for peace or justice will be an even steeper uphill climb with the filibuster in place.

This Senate rule is not in the Constitution or any law. It can be changed or eliminated on Day 1 of the new session by a simple majority of 51 senators. "Fixing" minority rule so that the 41 deciders of our public policies are "required" to talk about what they're doing at length on television will not solve the problem.

Please click here to write to your two senators right now, with a CC to the President, urging them to end the filibuster: http://act.rootsaction.org/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=7046

Please forward this email widely to like-minded friends.

-- The RootsAction.org team"

Please spread the word. Thanks so much for your support! You might not think you're doing much, but each person's support really counts. :)

From DemandProgress.com :

The NDAA amendment legalizes the use of mass propaganda campaigns on American audiences. It has been inserted into the latest defense authorization bill — and that bill just passed the House.

Please click here to demand that the Senate oppose ending the propaganda ban:

The NDAA amendment lifts bans on propaganda that have been around since the 1940s, neutralizing laws put in place to protect the American people from its government’s own “misinformation” campaigns.

“It removes the protection for Americans,” a Pentagon official told Buzzfeed, who broke the story. "There are no checks and balances. No one knows if the information is accurate, partially accurate, or entirely false.”

From the Petition Site:

The fin whale is the second largest animal in the world; only the blue whale is bigger. It is also one of the most endangered whales. Numbers never recovered from the commercial hunting of the 19th and 20th centuries and today there are only about 50,000 left.

One country still kills large numbers of these great whales: Iceland. Last year, the fin whale hunt was called off. This year, the Icelandic government is determined that the brutal slaughter of fin whales will resume.

Sign the petition here: http://www.care2.com/go/z/e/AGpWs/zm2w/A63Wu

Thank you so much for your support!

http://au.reachout.com/find/articles/an-abusive-relationship This offers tips on what to do / say to convince someone why they shouldn't remain in an abusive relationship. The problem with abusive relationships is that people who have been abused for so long see the abuse as being normal, a one off, or are scared of what happens if they leave. There are Australian domestic violence services (Rape Crisis Centre, Mens Line, Centre Against Sexual Assault Crisis, Police/Ambulance/Fire Brigade is 000)

http://www.heart-2-heart.ca/men/The Excellent advice on how abused men can leave violent relationships. The advice can also apply to abused women, and people of other genders. It covers safety, legal and financial issues, evidence documenting the abuse (photos, affidavits, journal/diary), contact details of domestic violence services, financial documents (credit card/mortgage/insurance/investment documents, your Will). This also offers great advice on how to convince someone to leave an abusive relationship and not be fooled when the abuser pretends to have changed their ways.

Also, something important to keep in mind: Domestic violence is a Child Protection issue. Many domestic violence situations (more than fifty percent) involve child neglect or child abuse. In Australia, children witnessing/hearing domestic violence is considered a form of abuse.

Website Blocking

The government can order service providers to block websites for infringing links posted by any users.

Risk of Jail for Ordinary Users

It becomes a felony with a potential 5 year sentence to stream a copyrighted work that would cost more than $2,500 to license, even if you are a totally noncommercial user, e.g. singing a pop song on Facebook.

Chaos for the Internet

Thousands of sites that are legal under the DMCA would face new legal threats. People trying to keep the internet more secure wouldn't be able to rely on the integrity of the DNS system.

Read this analysis from boing-boing.net

Get on the phone and call your representative. Express your disapproval. Tell him or her exactly how you feel, and that you don't support this. Tell your friends to call their representatives, their Congressperson, and complain. Mention that you are a registered voter that takes your civic responsibility seriously and that you will use that vote to express your feelings about this.

“We support the bill’s stated goals — providing additional enforcement tools to combat foreign ‘rogue’ websites that are dedicated to copyright infringement or counterfeiting,” the Internet companies wrote in Tuesday’s letter. “Unfortunately, the bills as drafted would expose law-abiding U.S. Internet and technology companies to new uncertain liabilities, private rights of action and technology mandates that would require monitoring of websites.”  The chamber-led coalition in support of the bill includes Walmart, Eli Lilly & Co. and Netflix.

Google and other opponents of the legislation argue that restricting the Internet in the U.S. sets a bad international precedent and that the language defines infringing too broadly.

Hi everyone,

Check this out! http://www.wrightslaw.com/info/ltrs.index.htm

This website has valuable information about special education law, education law, and advocacy for children with disabilities.

It has free flyers and resources, too. Wrightslaw is US based, but has some information on letter writing and communication that is priceless for anyone.

If you check the menu on the left hand side of the website, there's links on assistive technology (technology that helps people with disabilities), law, advocacy, ADHD, mediation, juvenile justice and more. You can also discover upcoming seminars and search for topics in alphabetical order (just look at the top left hand side of the website, under the heading "Wrightslaw").

There's also a section on how to write letters to stand up for and represent children with disabilities here: http://www.wrightslaw.com/info/ltrs.index.htm

Please feel more than free to let me know of any other legal resources for children or people with disabilities! And pass this on! It's more useful if more people know about it. You never know who might need it one day.

Hi everyone,

Here's a must see article - it's on the abuse and discrimination faced by prison inmates with intellectual disabilities:

Read more... )People with intellectual disabilities face hurdles of intellectual disability, on top of the dilemmas and dangers of being in prison.

While I believe that people who commit crimes should receive the penalties appropriate for their crimes (whether it's fines, community service, jail), that doesn't mean that their human rights should be ignored. We're all entitled to having our human rights respected, regardless of who we are or what we've done.

Trampling over human rights of others can lead to trampling of more people's human rights (including the rights of innocent people). I think if a society protects the rights of criminals, they're more likely to respect the rights of everyone else.

Hello everyone,

Here's a website with links to other websites on how to deal with bullying (at a face to face and also wider level):

To eliminate bullying, we need to address it at ALL levels (face to face interactions to wider levels - in policies, laws). Which is why reading this site may help - it shows how people can mobilise and work together to get rid of bullying. This site also has information on how to deal with workplace and school bullying.

Bullying No Way is a superb Aussie resource on bullying. It has information on laws, policies, teaching materials on bullying. Read more here! http://www.bullyingnoway.com.au/

I strongly encourage peple to read Bully Blocking, by Evelyn Fields. This book is a fantastic resource on how to deal with bullies. It shows bullying survivors how to handle bullying, and shows teachers and parents how to fight it. It's also being sold in Australian stores. You can buy it on Amazon here:

Hello everyone,

We need your help now. Zeynab Jalalian and Hossein Khezri are innocent women awaiting execution in Iran. Their crime? "Enmity against God." Sign this petition here to free these courageous women. Stop the Iranian government from executing them. Tell Ayatollah Sayed to give these women a fair trial according to international law: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/350/488/764

Zeynab and Hossein are both members of the minority Party for Free Life of Kurdistan. The Iranian government is using the phrase "Enmity against God" to persecute peaceful political dissenters. These women should not have to die for peacefully disagreeing with their government.

Thank you if you choose to help.

Hi everyone,

Please sign  the petition to repeal the Don't Ask Don't Tell law! Sign here: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/385/186/095

Thanks so much for signing or spreading the word!

Read below for more info: (text in italics is from The Petition Site):

The U.S. has never had this much momentum to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" -- the discriminatory law that forces gays and lesbians to live a lie if they want to serve their country.

McCain's anti-gay vendetta is so desperate that he's announced he will help block the Senate from repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," and the right-wing Family Research Council is making outlandish and bogus claims that repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" will increase sexual assault in the military and "undermine the religious liberties" of military chaplains.

Hello everyone,

The text in italics is from the websites below. Please read ahead, and tell everyone you know! Both are urgent issues.

Urge US to prevent maternal deaths:

Linda Coale, a healthy 35-year-old woman who died just days after giving birth to her son, Benjamin. Her age and delivery via c-section made her a high-risk case, yet no one – nurse, doctor, hospital welcome packet – told her to watch for signs of a blood clot.

She slipped through the cracks and died.

Benjamin, now 2, can’t celebrate Mother’s Day with his mom. But you can help save another son or daughter the heartbreak of growing up without a mother. I
n 40 countries women have a lower risk of maternal death than in the United States, and all of those countries spend less on health care.

Amnesty’s work on maternal health tackles the root causes of preventable maternal death such as discrimination, inadequate care and lack of secure access to care. Our goal is to make safe birth a top priority in the U.S. health system.

Our strategy has worked to make substantive changes and save women’s lives in Sierra Leone and Burkina Faso. Now it’s time to rise up for American women and children.

Help families celebrate a thousand more Mother’s Days with a gift to Amnesty International today.

Arizona's new anti-immigration law

Players are demanding the 2011 All-Star Game be moved from Phoenix, AZ unless the new law - which allows police to stop anyone they "reasonably" suspect of being in the country illegally - is repealed.

It's time we get the players' backs. I just signed a petition urging MLB Commissioner Bud Selig to move the game--can you join me at the link below?

Thank you so much!

Sign petition to support creation of a law in US that will create jobs for vulnerable and disadvantaged people:

Across America, jobs are getting harder and harder to come by, and people are suffering. But now some in Congress are championing a sensible plan to help make things right.

The Local Jobs for America Act (H.R.4812) would create up to 1 million jobs in the country's hardest-hit communities, and every member of Congress should be behind it.

Will you take a moment to ask your representative to co-sponsor and fight for the bill? Sign the petition here:

Thank you so much if you do choose to sign or spread the message about any of these valuable causes.

Please sign the petition in the link above. The petition urges US congress people to co-sponsor the Conflict Minerals Trade Act (H.R. 4128). The bill seeks to improve transparency and reduce the trade in conflict minerals coming from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in order to promote the...goal of supporting peace and security in the DRC.

Many of the mines from which these minerals are extracted are under the control of armed groups (especially in the volatile eastern part of the country, where conflict has been ongoing for many years).

The Conflict Minerals Trade Act outlines a clear...strategy aimed at ending the disastrous trade in conflict minerals that perpetuates the conflict in the DRC and enables gross human rights abuses.

Thanks so much to anyone else who signs or speaks out about this.

Hello everyone,

If you live in USA, please sign the petition here to close the Gun Show loophole (Unfortunately, people who live outside the US can't sign the petition.) : http://www.closetheloophole.org/main.cfm

Because of this loophole, criminals are allowed to buy guns without a background check. This has sadly led to many innocent people being brutally murdered every year.

The Gun Show Loophole is a serious gap in our nation’s gun laws, which allows individuals to buy guns without passing a background check. Over the years, this loophole has resulted in countless tragic shootings -- including the one at Columbine High School and the recent shooting of Pentagon police officers.

As concerned citizens, we stand with over 500 mayors from all across America in asking Congress to step up and close the Gun Show Loophole.

It is critical that criminal background checks are conducted on all purchasers at gun shows -- including people who buy from private sellers.

As we commemorate the tragedies at Columbine and Virginia Tech, we are reminded that legislative action is long overdue.

More and more innocent victims of gun violence are hurt or killed every day. It’s time for Congress to take action and close the Gun Show Loophole.

Hey there people,

The following information is from a workshop on the Guardianship Tribunal at Liverpool Hospital. All mistakes are mine. Let me know if I need to correct something!

Speaker Malcolm Scuyver

Person Responsible

The person after a Guardian who can consent to decisions being made on a person’s behalf is the Person Responsible. “Person Responsible” is the legal name for a person with the legal authority to make decisions on someone’s behalf.

Persons Responsible (in order of the person with the most legal authority to make decisions on someone’s behalf):

1.     Guardian

2.     Spouse

3.     Carer (must be unpaid)

4.     Close relative or friend

When is someone not a Person Responsible?

1.     They can decline the role of being the Person Responsible in writing

2.     A doctor can write that a person is incapable of being the Person Responsible

Hi there!

here's the lowdown on the Guardianship Tribunal. Here are the bare bones of what it's about, and what it does:

The Guardianship Tribunal can decide if a person needs to have a substitute decision maker due to their inability to make life decisions onttheir own behalf. Guardianship relates to decisions about a person's lifestyle and other personal matters, such as where they live, what services they receive, and what medical and dental treatment they receive. Financial management relates to decisions about a person's money and assets.

Pamphlet on what the Tribunal does:

Official GT site: http://www.gt.nsw.gov.au/

FAQs on Guardianship Tribunal: http://www.gt.nsw.gov.au/questions/

Facts from a workshop on the Guardianship Tribunal at Liverpool Hospital, NSW:

Presenter for Intro and overview - Malcolm Schyvens Deputy President of the Guardianship Tribunal

The Guardianship Tribunal can give consent to sterilisation forms. It can review Power of Attorney forms. It can also give approval of clinical trials for people who can't consent.

Guardianship Tribunal members are made up of (1) a lawyer (solicitor or barrister), (2) health professional (Medical staff and Allied Health. Medical staff includes doctors and nurses. Allied Health includes other health professionals, such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, dieticians, speech pathologists, podiatrists, diversional therapists) and (3) community member with experience in disability (either a person with a disability, or a carer etc).

A Private Guardian is a Guardian who is relative or a friend of the client. A Public Guardian is a Guardian from the Office of the Public Guardian.
